Abstract
Purpose: Kidney transplantation recipients are at risk for developing deep vein thrombosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of application graduated elastic compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression on the prevention of deep vein thrombosis.

Methods: A non-equivalent control pretest posttest design was performed. From the day of surgery, a total 36 people were included. 12 control groups who applied only graduated elastic compression stockings for 24 hours, 12 experimental groups (1) who applied both graduated elastic compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression for 24 hours, 12 experimental groups (2) who applied graduated elastic compression stockings for 24 hours and intermittent pneumatic compression for 12 hrs (8AM to 8PM). We checked the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis through color Duplex ultrasonography, blood tests, and leg circumference before kidney transplantation, 7 days after surgery, and 13 days after surgery. Also at 28 days after surgery, deep vein thrombosis was checked through color Duplex ultrasonography. Collected data were analyzed using SAS system for Windows V 9.4.

Results: Deep vein thrombosis developed in 13.8% of kidney transplantation recipients when mechanical prophylaxis was applied from the day of surgery. To find out the effect of the application of graduated elastic compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression in the control group, the experimental group (1) and the experimental group (2), there was no significant difference between the three groups (p>0.05).

Conclusion: In this study, the additional use of intermittent pneumatic compression to prevent deep vein thrombosis after kidney transplantation showed no significant effect compared with the graduated elastic compression stockings.
